Just about everyone in our modern society yearns to be rich, but few become wealthy. With almost everyone striving for it, why is real wealth so difficult to obtain? Are there fundamental differences between the rich and the poor that can account for such widely differing levels of success?
Rich people can appear capable of generating their own luck while those with less money seem to be stuck in a lifelong rut. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to assume this is due to some genetic difference in ability or a lack of work ethic on the side of the poor. If you look closely though, many wealthy people you know aren’t particularly high performers when it comes to standardized methods of measuring intelligence or scholastic performance.
Let’s examine some of the realities of the actual fundamental differences between rich people and poor people:
1. The rich work toward very specific and measurable goals
Many poor people believe they have no control over their situation and so they live day to day, week to week, and paycheck to paycheck. If you choose not to believe that you can create the life you desire, who would expect you to even try? First you must define what you want to stand any chance of knowing when you’ve gotten it.
2. Wealthy people dream aggressively
If one poor person tells their peers that they want to be a millionaire, their friends will probably tell them to buy a lottery ticket or to not even bother trying. Many poor people believe the system is rigged and will prevent them from getting what they want.
● Do you think that a person who thinks like this will ever be wealthy? People who have little, tend to always think small. People who have a lot, dream big.
3. The rich play aggressively to try to win
Poor people play not to lose what little they have. This shift in mindset is significant. The rich are boldly searching for a competitive advantage to earn more money. The poor worry much more about preserving what little they have. As Wayne Gretzky said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
4. Opportunities vs. obstacles
The wealthy see problems as opportunities, while the poor see obstacles and give up. If there is a recurring problem in your life, it’s probably a recurring problem for many other people. Create a solution and then sell it to them.
● Focusing on problems makes it very difficult to find solutions because you won’t stay motivated. By focusing on solutions with your eyes on the prize, you’ll find continually moving forward to be much easier.
5. Commitment counts
The rich stay committed to achieving their goals. The poor are good dreamers, but don’t turn their hopes into measurable goals. Wish into one hand and then spit into the other and see which one fills up first.
6. Peer groups matter
In general you’re the product of the 5 people you spend the most time with. We all tend to rise or fall to meet the level of our immediate peer group. Surround yourself with successful people. Spend time with people better off than you are if you want to succeed financially. You’ll be amazed at the change in perspective that comes with listening to people talk about how they made $2,000+ in a single day.
7. The rich constantly learn
Wealthy people are always learning new things, especially when comes to making money. The poor can have an attitude that they already know everything they need to know or that learning more won’t change their bad luck. Never stop learning.
It’s never too late to start developing the habits and attitudes presented here. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can turn things around. Becoming wealthy is the product of taking many small actions every day until they start to snowball into massive action. Start today and change your financial future!
